Vegan Poutine


Vegan Poutine  

 I used to live in Montréal and one of the perks living there was poutine. Especially the poutine from La Banquise. My favorite was the “La Taquise” which has additionally to gravy also fresh tomatoes, sour cream and guacamole. Needless to say that this was before I went plant based. Now, having moved country and no more access to poutine, I wanted to attempt a plant based re-creation.

Vegan Poutine

Makes 2 large servings

Potato Fries

Prep time: 10 min., Baking time: 30-40 min.


4-5 potatoes

1 tsp sea salt or other salt

freshly cracked pepper

1 tbsp Arrowroot Powder or cornstarch

optional seasoning

Vegan Poutine


1. Soak the potato fries in cold water for min. 15 min – 2hours.

2.Preheat oven to 190° degrees.

3. Pat dry the fries, season and place them on parchment paper and into the oven. Make sure there is space between the fries and turn them after ca. 20 min. .


Prep time: 5 min.


1-2 avocados

1/2 onion chopped

handful coriander

1/2 green chili, chopped

1/2 lime

salt to taste

Vegan Gravy

Prep time: 3 min.


1/2 large onion chopped

2 cloves garlic chopped

1 tbsp nutritional yeast

1 tbsp tamari sauce

1 tsp guar gum

1 tsp rice vinegar

1 tsp vegetable broth powder



1. Toss onion  + garlic on medium heat with tamari sauce + a bit of water until fragrant.

2. Add everything into a blender and mix. 


Chickpea Cheese

Prep time: 5 min.

I found the original recipe here. It sounded interesting, so I tried it. I am no fan of all the available store bought cheese substitutes. I have to say, it worked perfectly, it even grated like cheese and maybe looked like it, but it did not really taste like cheese – it tasted good, but not like cheese.


2 tbsp nutritional yeast

3/4 cup chickpea flour

1 tsp miso paste 

1 cup warm water

1 tsp salt


1. Mix all ingredients together, then heat up a pan and pour the mixture into the pan.

2. The mixture should thicken pretty quickly. Then turn off heat and put the mixture into the fridge for about 2 hours. 

3. Grate or prepare this vegan cheese to your liking.


Cashew Sour Cream

I’m also not a big fan of anything cashew based (except cashewgurt) because 1) it’s too dense for me and 2) it just tastes like cashews 😉 But for the sake of recreating this poutine, I wanted to try out a cashew sour cream. And it actually tastes pretty darn close to sour cream. Loved it!

Prep time: 5 min.


1/2 cup cashews

a good squeeze  lime juice

1/4 cup filtered water 

1 tbsp APCV

salt + pepper


1. Presoak the cashews for at least 1-2 hours.

2. Then just mix everything together in a blender.

Finally just load the fries with the gravy, cashew sour cream and then you can also add some guacamole (avo, smash lime juice, 1/2 onion, salt + pepper, bit of chili + cilantro – done) to top if off. Enjoy! And don’t worry, it only LOOKS very unhealthy.

  1. Hallo Liebe, sag mal, bist du eigentlich Deutsche? Ich probieren das Rezept die Tage mal aus. Habe das Video schon so oft gesehen und mache grade eine vegane Woche.
